It’s not a loop, it’s a feature! By this mechanism a GM can introduce certain spells into his game and give the players more power where needed.

The character doesn’t become too imbalanced, because he is limited by the number of spells he can maintain. You realized yourself, that the number of spells imply just more options not necessarily more power(s).

With an availability of “S” it’s on the dice, that you as the GM can directly steer the access of these tomes. Even when he lives in Drakeport or another big city, and has more than enough money, these books don’t grow on trees, and sought by more then one collector/elementalist.

This way you can easily justify that he can get only one or two available tomes per rank which are only remotely interesting to him. As the table tells us only about 60% of the tomes are for Elementalists anyway, and only about 15% are written for his distinct element (which gets higher by learning the Elemental Mastery edge).

Another point is, that there is always a chance to discover a double he already learned.

Final points are, that it is an expensive task to create such a tome, and spellcasters usually hide their secrets from the eyes or the uninitiated or competitiors. It is a very challenging task to buy a new copy or persuade a friendly scribe to pen you one. Even then it will take months to write one properly…

Like i said, this edges effect is rather obvious for most instant spells. Maintained spells have usually only an advantage when you have a good guess when you need the spells effect. It just spares you a round of casting in a conflict.

The magician is Teleported out of the frey after a few rounds of combat.

A Blast explodes in a hollow-way, where a horde of ice goblins may eventually come through in a few rounds.

At a predetermined time a Voice on the Wind calls for backup and a Healing treats any wounds.

You will usually use spells manipulated with this edge more tactically, then usual. You may cast a spell beforehand “to go for a raise”, so that you may have guaranteed success in the upcoming encounter. You may cover your back with a few “shoot and forget” spells, like Fear, Burst or Blast, that hold off any opponents by being activated automatically over the next 6 rounds, while you concentrate you efforts in the other direction, where the more important things occur.

This edge is especially potent with instant spells.

Another nice effect: Cover an area with 3 or 4 area of effects spells that go off in 6, 5, and 4 rounds. Because the casting takes usually a round these spells go off a the same time. A good method to set almost perfect killing ground for any hordes, troops or swarms approaching your possition in the next rounds.

These are just a few of the more obvious applications of the edge, that came to my mind…

Not if some use different forms, and none you know are accepted. Like the “shocked” smiley, for instance…
