We’ve managed to wrestle Wiggy away from his busy schedule so he can say a few words about the Journeys book.
Why a book on travel?
In many games travel is simply a means to an end, a way of getting to the adventure. As such, it’s frequently ignored. We’ve spent years designing a world full of wonderful and mysterious sites and creating the beautiful maps in the Hellfrost Atlas and Atlas Map Packs, so it seems a crying shame to waste the opportunity for players to interact with the landscape.
So it’s all new material?
Including Land of Fire, Hellfrost has dozens of books and PDFs, and information concerning various aspects of long distance travel are spread across multiple publications. Part of our plan was to bring all that material into one convenient place, make revisions and streamlining where needed (Hellfrost is almost a decade old now!), and add new material.
So what can fans expect in the book?
For a start, the gods, which have always been important, continue to play a vital roll. Honor the gods of travel before starting out on a journey, and they may reward you with Travel Tokens – essentially a means of making your journey run smoother.
The core book is broken down into five chapters – Starting Out, Overland, Water & Air, Underground, and Hazards. I’m only on the second chapter, but I’ve already covered terrain and how it affects play, hunting, vehicles, and overland travel (revised). After finishing this newsletter I’ll be taking a look at random buildings and features one might encounter on the road.
