Thanks for your work, without it I wouldn’t even think about switching my campaign to the new magic system!

I have a question to everybody using SWADE powers in your Hellfrost games. How do you handle heahwisards? Spending 3 rounds to cast a spell without a negative modifier just to have it for a minute seems like a weird thing. Also I have no idea how to handle casting multiple spells at the same round (or espetially spending several rounds to cast 2-3 spells).

I also found it weird that this is the only domain with no named ruler and the strangest stuff history (broke his stuff so golems won’t capture it?!). No answers found in any books that I am aware off though.

edit: oh, you were talking abut the gender. Even stranger than. I think Shadowlords are up to something.

A left over from a nearly draft.

That’s a shame, it sounds really cool

It also says, that the knight must slay a creature with Immunity (cold). However, there are not that many creatures with this immunity, and even frost giants (a tough foe to slay in 1 to 1 combat) only have Resistance. Is it an error or are Shield Knights supposed to slay Hellfrost dragons only (well, not only, but mostly)?

Enno, thanks. I was actually asking that for Russian translators, so while I appreciate your answer, I would like to hear from TAG team as well.

. A mage or priest can learn the same spell multiple times with a different trapping each time

So logically you pick one trapping when you learn your spell and you stick with it forever 🙂

At a quick glance, I only found 2 spells trappings for which are mechanically important and aren’t specified – bolt (Arrow-rune) and barrier (Shield-rune). I would say that for those spells you can pick whatever trapping you want. All the spells within Earth-rune should obviously have earth trapping. Blast in Coldfire rune lists you available trapping, and you can switch between them as much as you want.

I am surprised nobody mentioned Tabletop Audio yet. Totally free and easy to use. BattleBards and SyrenScape are not free, but I read a number of good reviews.
Matt Mercer from Critical Role published his playlist which is divided by themes. Half of the songs are free to download.
Video games OST are pretty good for trpg. TES, Witcher, Gothics, Fable, Banner Saga (nordic-themed), Pillars of Eternity and all the D&D games – Icewind Dale, Baldur’s Gate and NWN.

I am using a modified version of Matt Mercer’s playlist with some extra themes – “environments” like frozen, forest, marsh, dungeon. I am also trying to find a unique song for major locations/people. For intro, I am using “Arriving at Docks” from Icewind Dale II

Welcome to the forum and the world of Hellfrost!

    2. All the information from Hellfrost Region Guides is in either Atlas (geography), Matters of Faith (cleric training, holy days and minor gods), or Hellfrost expansions (new Edges and monsters).

    3. Land of Fire is another region in this world, and it’s not really connected with Rassilion. There are references to Land of Fire in Hellfrost Gazetteer and Atlas (like the embassy in Magocracy), but you do not need those books to play in the frozen north. Think of Skyrim and Morrowind – two regions with some connections, but entirely different.

    6. Only 2 adventures from the Codex should be played back-to-back – N3 Shadow of Darkness and S1 The Siege of Watchgap Fort. Other adventures, including the other two from Saga of the Frost Giants, can be played in any order (especially since they take place in different regions). Keep in mind that they are designed for a particular Rank of characters (but there are suggestions on how to adjust the difficulty level for the more advanced party).

    8. Have not tried Realm Works, but Obsidian Portal is pretty good for sorting all this information. I am currently using a custom wiki for players and Microsoft OneNote for my GM notes.

I would make it an Investigation roll, not a Notice roll (or both) – it is not only about noticing the less damaged books, but about finding out if the books are any valuable. It also rewards players who invested in this rarely used skill.

Be aware that Emeric said that his church wants all the books party will find while they can keep the treasure

Anything we discover, other than books and scrolls, is yours to keep…

I, however, did allow the players to keep 2 books they found and I also made them a very specific Knowledge books: “Annales apon Quintus IV is Olus II” (Heligi, +1 to pre-IR history checks) and “Volumen wizardare expediri” (Classical Anari, +1 to rolls about artifacts). Those bonuses won’t break the game but might be useful later on.

You might find useful those book title generators so you don’t just say to your players “well you found 5 books on history”

    General books
    Magic books
    Holy books
    Magical scholar books

If you want to go a step further, translate those names to Latin/Greek/any other language you see fit. Even if those won’t get found, you can use them later in S3 or V2 adventures.

One more step further – take index cards and write all the info about the books on those. When players roll to find books, shuffle your deck, draw a card for each success, and give it to players. Again, you can use remaining cards later.

    Ideas for book content:
    * Tome of Lore (narrow Knowledge area)
    * Bestiary (strength and weaknesses of 2-3 specific foes like demons or constructs)
    * Tome of Learning (new aspect for the spell one of characters already has, not a new spell)
    * Gazetteer of Heligi Empire (map is very damaged but you get 1-2 adventure seeds)
    * Songbook (gives a scald d6+2 Story Points they can spend on Heligi related song if you are using Scalds and Stories rules)

    Hope it was helpful!
