Two sections in the Player's Guide suggest that the moon somehow affects the availability of magic on Rassilon. On page 50 "Magic & the Moon," we're told that the moon is the greatest source of magical energy in Rassilon. Then, on page 51 under "The Hellfrost Effect," the very first sentence indicates that mages are affected by "lunar tidal flows."
So my question, what are "lunar tidal flows" and how exactly do they affect mages? Was this something edited out of the original material and the reference under "The Hellfrost Effect" was simply missed, or are some guidelines regarding tidal flows missing? |

It got cut. Those references must have been missed. Originally there were rules for phases of the moon and magic, but with the Siphoning and the Hellfrost effect it just became yet another modifier to complicate the picture. Magic still comes from the moon, in that the threads begin there, but the moon itself has no effect on play.
I'll think about putting out an optional freebie so GMs can add it in or maybe use it in their own fantasy worlds. _________________ Wiggy

Sorry, that the lunar cycle rules got cut. Would have been fun to play.
How good do Maeras priests and paladins cast ANY spells in the book, if they aren't as good as specialized magicians? -2 on Faith, if they use a spell not in the spell list of their cult? Or did i miss a reference somewhere else in the PHB? _________________ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who know binary and those who don't. |

That's assuming the Disciple of Maeras edge, which grants a +2 to use of dispel. Based on that -2, I'd assume that a lot of clerics try and reach expert in faith as soon as possible...or learning boost/lower trait and accepting the -2 when casting it. So the first they'd be able to do that is at seasoned, with a like d8-d10 of Faith.

I take it you're refering to this text from the Maera entry... "In return, she grants her disciples the ability to work any spell, though not as well as a specialist mage."?
If so, you need to read the Disciple of Maera Edge for an explanation. The ability to cast any spell isn't open to every cleric of Maera -- just disciples. Spells on their spell list they learn and cast as normal. _________________ Wiggy

Was the original influence of lunar tidal flows similar to the Moon Magic sidebar on page 31 of the Fantasy World Builder Toolkit or something completely different? _________________ Kristian

It went something like this...
Quarter waxing: +1 when casting Novice spells
Half waxing: +1 for Novice & Seasoned
3/4 waxing: +1 for Novice, Seasoned, & Veteran
Full: +1 to all
3/4 waning: -1 Novice spells
Half waning: -1 Novice & Seasoned
Quarter waning: -1 Novice, Seasoned, & Veteran
New: -1 to all _________________ Wiggy

Thanks, Wiggy! I'm linking to this thread in my Player's Guide review, which should be out tomorrow morning.
Just out of curiosity, is the table on page 108 in the Life in Rassilon chapter an artifact of that content that was cut? _________________ Kristian

Not really. It just tells you what phase of the moon falls on each day. Handy for judging lighting conditions at night. _________________ Wiggy

How about a nice calendar showing Rassilon's months, the moon phases, high holy days of the major cults, the seasons for the major regions?
As a PDF freebie to hand it out to the players to keep track of their adventures, and for the GM to better plan such things as evil rites under a new moon and such. |

I've started work on a calendar. It currently has a page for each month with the lunar phases on it. I can work on adding the High Holy Days and such and I'd be happy to share it as a pdf if that's okay with the TAG folks. A small sample image of what I've done so far is below (so you can see the basic format).

You could mail it to Rob for hosting on the TAG site (credited to you, of course). There's a lot of rituals in a future project that would need to be added, but that's for another day. Yes, I am an evil tease. _________________ Wiggy
